THE REFEREE

Foul Detection

EXCELLENT

Comment...
The referee's foul detection was excellent.   The referee identified virtually every foul and correctly penalised them.  He was also very consistent with what he classified as a foul.  Throughout the game, he also played several superb advantages and also chose well where to deploy these and where not to.

Positioning

EXCELLENT

Comment...
The referee's positioning was generally excellent. At no point during that match was the referee in danger of getting in the way of play. He took a wide range of positions that enabled him to superbly identify and penalise offences.   In the 32nd Minute,  Chelsea #5 was correctly cautioned for simulation, an excellent decision in which the excellent position the referee had adopted would have been a big factor in enabling him to call correctly.

Man Management

GOOD

Comment...
The referee's man management throughout the match was generally good. In the 16th Minute, following a free kick award,  several players from both team surrounded the referee and challenged him.  He dealt with this superbly, by clearly communicating with them and establishing his authority. He also spoke to players regularly throughout the match, when awarding free kicks to explain his decisions.

However, in the 84th Minute,  prior to correctly cautioning Southampton's #17, Chelsea's #26  ran to the referee to remonstrate for action to be taken. The referee could have ideally given a more formal rebuke or possibly even a caution for this clear challenge to his authority.

Card Issuing

GOOD

Comment...
All cautions issued by the referee were accurate and well justified.  As alluded to in the Positioning section,  the caution of Chelsea's #5 was a superb decision. The cautioning of the Southampton #17 was also a good decision, though he was possibly fortunate not to have been cautioned earlier.  Chelsea's #7 was also slightly fortunate to escape a caution after several foul challenges on Southampton players in the space of a few minutes.
Fitness

EXCELLENT

Comment...
The referee's fitness was of an excellent standard.

THE ASSISTANT REFEREES

Assistant 1: EXCELLENT
Assistant 2: SATISFACTORY

Comment...
The Assistants were required to make numerous offside decisions throughout the match.  Assistant #1 called these superbly and assisted the referee with the award of a couple of foul challenges.  Assistant 2  missed  several offside's,  particularly in the first half.   Both assistants were up with play throughout the match.

OVERALL

VERY GOOD

SCORE
